183839 - How to Treat quiz: Breast disease in pregnancy and lactation
This education aims to assist GPs with the management of breast lesions in pregnant and lactating women. This education explores the breast changes, both physiological and pathological, which occur during pregnancy and lactation. Benign lesions and gestational malignancy are discussed.
Relevance to General PracticeThe breast is a complex, highly specialised modified apocrine gland that is responsive to physiologic hormonal changes. In preparation for lactation and breastfeeding, the breast undergoes normal changes. The hormones that effect the breast can also affect accessory and ectopic breast tissue. Pre-existing breast lesions can also change under the influence of changes in circulating hormones.
