Congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract

Relevance to General Practice

CAKUT are relatively common in paediatric practice. Although many are incidental findings with no significant health implications, there are many which required specialist involvement. The clinical presentation can be non-specific and requires a high index of suspicion. Special attention should be given in the history to the findings of antenatal ultrasounds and urinary tract infections. Appropriate investigation in the primary care setting is essential, along with prompt specialist referral and prophylactic antibiotics where indicated.
