Education GP's in clinical dilemmas in Psychiatry along with providing them with updated skills & techniques to use within their practices, in particular the areas of; Perinatal sleep disorders & furthering skills in assessing & managing prescription medication and how to acknowledge & manage addiction concerns, pain (management & when to refer), bariatric surgery & how mental health conditions apply & what to do. Guidelines for treating anxiety disorders.

Relevance to General Practice

The education program has been compiled based on feedback from General Practitioners in the greater surrounding area, based on case studies they are presented with in everyday practice. Topics & presented discussed will assist development of skills for GP's to enable better assessment & management of patients within the community.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify patients presenting with addiction symptoms & assess the need for referral to appropriate professionals as indicated for patients with prescription drug addiction
  • Determine which key factors to consider regarding mental health & psychological issues in bariatric patients. Demonstrate ability to conduct a biospschosocial assessment of a bariatric patient, including the multimodal management
  • Implement skills to diagnose patients with ADHD and provide treatments that where necessary may involve medications.
  • Implement assessment & management skills for patients presenting with chronic pain & manage their symptoms, including therapies or processes not traditionally thought of.
  • Summarise course reference materials & where appropriate identify effective referral pathways & options for continuity of patient care, while establishing a more collaborative approach between - GP's , Psychiatrists, Psychologists
