185861 - IUD insertion course

  • : Online

This course aims to provide general practitioners with the knowledge, skills and competence to insert IUDs and manage associated consultations in their own practice. The course includes theoretical knowledge on these topics, assessment of knowledge and clinical placements. Supervised clinical placements include the learner providing pre and post insertion information, gaining consent, role playing and observing an insertion and managing immediate post insertion care, followed by inserting IUDs with supervisor support. Typically around 10 insertions are done during the supervised clinical placements.

Relevance to General Practice

This course provides GPs with the skills to be able to insert intrauterine devices (IUDs) independently in a general practice setting. IUDs are recognised as a very effective and well tolerated first-line method of contraception for all reproductive age groups. In addition, use of levonorgestrel containing IUDs as a first line treatment for appropriately investigated heavy menstrual bleeding is credited with a large reduction in the number of hysterectomies performed. Increasing access to IUDs is a key indicator of success for the National Women’s Health Strategy. The Family Planning Victoria IUD insertion course is well recognised as providing the skills and resources necessary for delivery of this important service by GPs.
