This e-learning resource aims to build capability in skills, knowledge and the management of methamphetamine use and subsequent disorders. Learners will understand the effects and harms caused by methamphetamine use and the treatment options available to patients, thereby reducing harm experienced by the individual.

Relevance to General Practice

Methamphetamine e-learning module is designed to improve a medical practitioner’s knowledge and confidence about meth/amphetamine, its assessment and managing withdrawal and other meth/amphetamine-related conditions. The detrimental health and social impacts of meth/amphetamine far outweigh the frequency of its use with estimates of the annual cost of meth/amphetamine use as high as $5 billion. This is in part explained by the increase in the use of crystal methamphetamine, which carries a far greater risk of dependency. Between 2010 and 2016 daily, or weekly use of methamphetamine more than doubled. A recent survey of injecting drug users found that of those who reported overdosing, 51% attributed this overdose to crystal methamphetamine. There is wide-scale stigma regarding people that use meth/amphetamines. Medical Practitioners have a key role in prevention, early detection and management of substance use including methamphetamine.

Learning outcomes
  • Conduct an initial assessment and recognise the harms that are associated with methamphetamine use and be able to respond appropriately.
  • Explain the pharmacology of methamphetamine knowing which neurotransmitters are affected and how.
  • Manage withdrawals knowing how to access support and when it is appropriate to make a referral for inpatient withdrawal management.
  • Appraise the need for psychosocial support and assist patients in gaining access by providing information on treatment services and making appropriate referrals.
  • Apply a systematic biopsychosocial approach to the patient presenting with methamphetamine use disorder to inform and guide treatment planning.
