Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common and can significantly affect cognition, academic achievement, work productivity, exercise tolerance and quality of life.
Iron deficiency, even without anaemia, can cause fatigue, cognitive impairment and mood changes and in patients with heart failure can worsen the degree of heart failure.
The cause of iron deficiency must be sought and, where possible, addressed.
