186850 - Hepatitis C testing and treatment

Speciality Classification
General Practice ( GP ) / Family Medicine
1 hr

This webinar covers the new 2020 hepatitis C testing guidelines and the new PBS requirements for prescribing DAA treatments for hepatitis C. It also provides GPs guidance on how to identify priority populations for testing and how to engage a diverse range of patients in treatment with or without specialist assistance.

Relevance to General Practice

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major public health challenge for Australia, affecting about 200 000 people who are at risk of progressive liver fibrosis leading to cirrhosis, liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The introduction of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies for HCV that are highly effective and well tolerated is a major medical advance. DAA can be prescribed by GPs and with the new simple on treatment monitoring requirements, GPs can do this in their practices with or without specialist involvement.
