To provide and assist participants to confidently carry out an emergency response to a patient who presents with sudden collapse and cardiac arrest, using the immediate drill, CPR and an AED.

Relevance to General Practice

The intention of the CPR requirement is to ensure all Australian GPs maintain their skills and competency to perform CPR procedures on a patient or member of the community as and when it is needed. GPs have a duty to respond to sudden cardiac arrest and are expected to perform CPR procedures in accordance with current ARC guidelines and techniques, without the assistance of specialist emergency services or equipment if required to do so.

Learning outcomes
  • Assess a scene and identify the casualties vital signs
  • Recall and perform the first aid principles of the DRABCD procedure
  • Demonstrate steps in the recommended care of an unconscious casualty
  • Perform CPR using both ventilation and compression skills
  • Effectively use an Automatic Defibrillator
