190193 - Online module: Tricky Lipids - A guide to familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH)

  • : Online

To improve the detection and management of familial hypercholesterolaemia, to reduce risk of premature heart attack and stroke in those undiagnosed with the condition.

This online CPD module includes:
• Tips to identify high-risk patients with sub-optimal or no management of lipid-lowering therapy
• The latest information in understanding and managing of FH
• Tools to assist in diagnosis, practical case study and expert videos.

Focus: Lipids, Familial Hypercholesterolaemia, FH, Cholesterol, Cardiology, Statin therapy, lipid-lowering therapy, LDL-C

Relevance to General Practice

With only 10% of people with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) receiving a diagnosis, GPs are well placed to screen for FH in their practice. FH is the most common and serious genetic disorder affecting lipid metabolism, resulting in severe elevations of blood cholesterol levels. People with undiagnosed and untreated FH are 20 x more likely to have a heart attack or stroke than the general population and experience greatly reduced life expectancy, making early screening and treatment of crucial importance.

Learning outcomes
  • Recognise LDL-C as a modifiable risk factor in CV events
  • Explain the red flags that suggest familial hypercholesterolaemia and the importance of cascade screening to diagnose the condition
  • Implement treatment targets to optimally manage patients with lifestyle and lipid-lowering therapy to prevent or minimise CVD.
  • Describe the needs of high-risk CVD patients, and calculate and manage risk through treatment targets
  • Monitor patients and arrange appropriate referral to improve patient safety outcomes and quality of life.
  • Domains of General Practice

D1. Communication skills and the patient-doctor relationship

D2. Applied professional knowledge and skills

    • Diagnosis and management is evidence-based and relevant to the needs of the patient
