191758 - How to Treat quiz: Chronic diarrhoea in children

  • : Online

The aim of this education is to prompt GPS to perform a thorough history and examination to identify red flags and differential diagnoses in any child who presents with chronic diarrhoea. Clinical assessment will guide appropriate choice of laboratory investigations and may assist specialists when triaging referrals of children with chronic diarrhoea.

Relevance to General Practice

Chronic diarrhoea in childhood is a common reason for presentation to a GP. It may be a source of considerable concern to parents and a diagnostic challenge to for clinicians. Associated symptoms and nutritional compromise may be under-recognised, while causes can vary substantially in severity, with different investigations and management strategies indicated, depending on the specific presentation. Referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist may be indicated and recognition of ‘red flag’ symptoms or concerning signs is important to guide clinician decision making and referral
