Obesity is a chronic disease state broadly defined as a BMI of equal to or greater than 30kg/m2 due to excessive body fat mass. It is a public health problem and is increasing in prevalence.
Severity of obesity is classified according to BMI, hip, neck and/or waist circumference, excess body fat and/or the presence of co-morbidities. Excessive body fat is significantly associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality, with the risk of non-communicable disease increasing with increasing BMI.
