193707 - Diabetes Alliance 2020 Master Class # 1 - Glen Innes

Speciality Classification
General Practice ( GP ) / Family Medicine
Face to face

To enhance GP knowledge and confidence in managing Type 2 diabetes in the community with reference to:
Appropriate screening, diagnosis and classification of Diabetes Mellitus (DM); Pathophysiology & complications of DM; Medication & risks; Annual care cycles & referrals; Weight management.

Relevance to General Practice

Our region has around 80,000 people living with Diabetes, with nearly 40% undiagnosed. Among those with established T2 diabetes, evidence based care processes are patchy as per our data across 53 GP practices involving 15000 diabetic patients.(1) 10% patients have very poor diabetic control and only 30% have documented annual care cycles. The consequences of such poorly managed diabetes is already seen in our community: we have higher incidence of amputations; higher diabetes related admissions compared with rest of NSW; 30% of our hospital beds are occupied with patients with diabetes. The overall consequences of poorly managed diabetes include not only costs to the society but also loss of individual productivity, health and well-being and unfortunate premature death and suffering. GPs do not receive sufficient structured diabetes management training as a part of their curriculum and may have limited competency.
