Looking after yourself is very important to achieve and maintain good mental health. During times of stress and worry, self-care is even more important, but unfortunately also more challenging. This talk will focus on ways to look after your mental health during worrying and stressful times.

Dr Joanne Connaughton (DPhysioRes, BAppSc Physio, APAM) - Adjunct Associate Professor School of Physiotherapy, The University of Notre Dame Australia. National Chair Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) Mental Health Group and Secretary International Organisation of Physiotherapists in Mental Health (IOPTMH).

Associate Professor Joanne Connaughton is an adjunct at the University of Notre Dame Australia, having retired from the Dean’s position in 2018. Before moving to academia Jo was Senior Physiotherapist in a mental health hospital working with adults with acute mental health issues. This influenced both her future teaching and her research with Jo’s doctorate exploring headaches experienced by people with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.

Jo is a qualified Mental Health First Aid trainer, Chair of the APA National Mental Health group and Secretary of the International Organisation of Physical Therapist in Mental Health. She passionate about treating every person as an individual with both a mind and a body, promoting good physical health for people with mental health issues and good mental health for people with physical health problems. Jo believes that physiotherapists are best placed health professionals to truly implement a bio-psycho-social approach to every person we treat.

Georgie Davidson - Musculoskeletal physiotherapist, APA Titled Pain Physiotherapist, Yoga teacher, Credentialed Mindfulness Teacher (MTIA) Senior Physiotherapist: Northern Pain Rehabilitation Service: NALHN, Adelaide Director of Mindful Movement Physiotherapy, Australia APA SA Chair Mental Health Group.

Georgie’s passion is to guide people toward greater wellbeing in the midst of life challenges. She is intrigued by the human body-mind connection and ways to approach the complexity of lived experience. Resilience, acceptance and healing comes from within. She sees that her role as a physiotherapist, yoga and credentialed mindfulness teacher is to enhance this innate capacity through awareness of the body as it breathes, rests and moves.

Georgie is a Musculoskeletal and Tilted Pain Physiotherapist working as Senior Physiotherapist for the Northern Pain Rehabilitation Service in Adelaide. She is also Director of Mindful Movement Physiotherapy, an organization providing mindfulness based training to health professionals, educators, leaders and workplaces.

Georgie has an interest in skill building for wise decision making in times of stress and has created and taught programs to students of Paramedic Medicine and MBA Responsible Leadership. Her clinical and teaching experience come together in the BodyMAP course (Body Mindfulness and Pain) which provides training to health professionals interested in being leaders in integrating mindfulness-informed practices into care for people with persistent pain.
