76420 - National Bowel Cancer Screening Program

  • : Online

This activity consists of a case study, where over a number of consultations, participants assess and manage the problem. Throughout the different stages of the case study, key aspects of bowel cancer and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) are discussed.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore the risk factors and symptoms associated with bowel cancer and familiarise themselves with the eligibility criteria for the NBCSP.

Participants will also be able to explore the different levels of risk that patients carry based on their family history and the findings of their screening tests and determine the most suitable follow up and management strategies in the short and long term. The activity also touches on a GP's duty of care to those who participate in the NBCSP.

Relevance to General Practice

The National Bowel Cancer Screening program provides faecal occult blood test (FOBT) screening kits to Australians between the ages of 50 and 74 in order to detect bowel cancers and polyps early, as early detection has been shown to improve prognosis.

There are many stages through the screening process where the general practitioner plays a pivotal role. GPs need to ensure that their patients are regularly screened according to their risk profile, interpret the result of the FOBTs and initiate appropriate follow up testing for patients with a positive FOBT.
