Relevance to General Practice

The RACGP acknowledges that the ‘general practice management of women’s health involves a holistic patient centered approach to the physical, mental and emotional health of women, their families, and their relationships. Women’s health needs to be understood in the context of their psychosocial and cultural environment’ (RACGP 2011). 

The contraception module involves a hoslistic patient-centered approach to the assessment and management of women’s contraceptive needs throughout the reproductive lifespan.

Learning outcomes
  • Demonstrate a thorough assessment of the circumstances under which a patient may attend for contraceptive advice and prescription.
  • Demonstrate the immediate management required for the short term management of a female patient’s contraceptive needs.
  • Describe features that require specific management such as contraindications for use of COCPs and cultural factors.
  • Applies best practice guidelines for the longer term prescription of a range of contraceptive options.
