  • : Online

To provide an overview of the concept of open disclosure in the delivery of healthcare in Australia. Issues discussed include the reasons this policy was implemented and the benefits to patients and the practitioner. The module discusses the key components of the open disclosure standard , how to implement it, and how to obtain assistance from your employer or MDO. The aim is to ensure an open, honest and prompt explanation to patients of any unexpected or adverse outcomes, and ensure continuity of care , so as to minimise the prospects of a complaint or claim.

Relevance to General Practice

The Medical Board of Australia Code of Conduct "Good Medical Practice" at section 3.10 Adverse events explains how practitioners should conduct themselves in such situations .
