83646 - Introduction to point of care ultrasound for GPs

  • : Online

The ALM will provide hands on experiences with specific sonographic procedures relevant to a rural setting; the Extended Focused Assessment using Sonography for Trauma (EFAST), first trimester trans-abdominal diagnostic & emergency obstetric care, DVT and other ultrasound guided diagnostic procedures. Participants will become familiar with the process of acquiring images using a point of care ultrasound device and interpreting sonographic images in a standard General Practice diagnostic process.

Relevance to General Practice

There are a number of benefits for GPs providing ultrasound in general practice including considerable time and cost savings, reduced number of secondary referrals providing peace of mind to patients with prompt diagnosis and immediate treatment. These benefits are amplified in regional, rural and remote areas where availability of radiological services can lead to longer wait times, higher costs and longer travel times associated with referrals to ultrasound.
