83836 - Pulmonary Rehabilitation: The Basics

  • : Online

This one-hour online activity covers the basics of pulmonary rehabilitation in terms of ‘what to expect’ in the primary care setting i.e. who to refer, key components of pulmonary rehabilitation, broad descriptions of what the patient can expect, outcomes, and eligibility and access.

Relevance to General Practice

A growing body of evidence supports the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation in chronic lung disease; this important component of COPD management has become a standard of care. However, patient referral and uptake to pulmonary rehabilitation programs remains low in Australia and across the world.

Several barriers to pulmonary rehabilitation have been identified, including lack of perceived benefit by the healthcare provider. To improve uptake of this high-evidence practice recommendation, GPs must be well-informed of the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation, so that they may be confident in referring suitable patients and utilising available resources.
