84179 - Dealing with Anxiety Disorders
This highly interactive 6 hour workshop aims to provide GPs with a comprehensive theoretical understanding of anxiety disorders together with an extensive range of skills and strategies to better manage anxiety in their practices. Clinical scenarios form the basis of the learning as participants explore how anxiety disorders arise, how they are maintained and the role general practitioners can play in addressing these effectively
The emphasis on psychoeducation, the delivery of behavioural and cogntive interventions together with the experiential practice of relaxation and mindfulness skills will enable GPs providing FPS consultations to further enhance their skills in delivering psychological services.
Anxiety disorders are common in Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2007, anxiety disorders were the most common mental disorders, affecting 14.4 % of all people aged 16-85 years in the 12 months prior to the survey. People suffering from anxiety disorders will often present to the general practitioner with physical symptoms often looking for a physical explanation for their symptoms. This places the GP in a unique position to recognise and treat anxiety disorders in patients who would not be otherwise accessing a health professional.Learning outcomes
