84230 - Performing spirometry: The why, who, when and how of spirometry for COPD in general practice

  • : Online

This one-hour online activity will provide an understanding of the principles underlying spirometric diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and review the key requirements for performing high quality spirometry.

Relevance to General Practice

Up to two-thirds of COPD patients in primary care may be undiagnosed, mainly due to lack of screening for at-risk patients and underuse of diagnostic spirometry. Guidelines advocate the use of spirometry in confirming a diagnosis of COPD, however spirometry-confirmed diagnosis is made in only 30–50% of cases. Appropriate use of spirometry is also essential for monitoring disease progression and informing patient management. GPs are well placed to identify patients who are at risk of COPD, and to perform, or refer patients for, spirometry testing when appropriate to confirm a COPD diagnosis. This activity will provide GPs with an understanding of the importance of early screening and diagnosis of COPD, and the principles underlying spirometric diagnosis of COPD. Review of the key requirements for performing high quality spirometry will enable GPs to educate their patients who are undergoing spirometry testing and to ensure that high quality spirometry data is obtained in practice.

Learning outcomes
  • Implement the use of a symptom checklist to identify at-risk patients for COPD screening and diagnosis
  • Recognise the importance of screening and early diagnosis of COPD
  • Use spirometry testing to confirm a COPD diagnosis
  • Discuss outcome measures of spirometry with patients
  • Explain to patients what is required to obtain high quality spirometry data
