84789 - Foundations of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine - Part 1

  • : Online

Introduce GPs to the evidence-based nutritional and environmental aspects of all health conditions. Discussion will focus on nutritional biochemistry, major nutrients and the common nutritional deficiencies that may be associated with specific diseases, and the role diet may have in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

Relevance to General Practice

Prof Paul Glasziou noted (RACGP Conference, 2006) - Best practice = evidence + expertise + patient context and values. This embraces the importance of the GP’s ability to utilize and/or understand the broadest available treatment options that the patient may require and/or request from the GP. A recent Australian Health Survey (2011-2012 ABS) found that “a range of genetic, social, economic and environmental factors are recognised as increasing the risk of developing a particular health condition”. Given the increasing need to care for the patient as a whole and the recognition that diet and nutrition play a key role in preventing the increasing burden of chronic disease and health in Australia, it is essential that education providers supply nutritional medicine education to GPs. We aim to support GP’s options in the treatment plans, efficacy, safety and application of using nutritional and environmental medicine to ensure best practice in medicine continues.

Learning outcomes
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies and imbalances, and the role of environmental aspects, in common and lifestyle-related conditions.
  • Review the foundations of nutritional biochemistry, and understnad the role of macro and micro nutrients.
  • Implement the use of a comprehensive diet history questionnaire, and integrate recommendations for an anti-inflammatory diet.
  • Identify the different types of pathology testing and other investigations to assess for gastrointestinal health.
