84796 - IUD Insertion Training - Distance

  • : Online

This practical training program provides participants with the knowledge and skills to perform IUD insertion and to manage IUD-related issues. The course is comprised of 4 hours Theory (online) and 3-4 Clinical Sessions under the supervision of qualified IUD inserting clinicians.

Relevance to General Practice

Despite international evidence, which strongly suggests that the use of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCs) reduces unintended pregnancy, their use in Australia remains low. There is a need to address the barriers to increasing the use of LARCs in Australia. Lack of suitably qualified doctors has been identified as a barrier to IUD uptake, particularly in regional and remote areas. This training program provides GPs and practice nurses with the confidence and skills to safely undertake IUD insertion and management of IUD-related issues in their own practice

Learning outcomes

  • Explain IUD use for long-acting reversible contraception and the role of the levonorgestrel (LNG)- IUD in the management of heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Describe the types of IUD available in Australia; their mode of action, advantages and disadvantages and contraindications to IUD use.
  • Assess patient suitability for IUD insertion; list relevant investigations and advise on appropriate location and timing for insertion.
  • Describe the steps involved in IUD insertion in the outpatient setting and the technique required for the different devices available.
  • Outline the management of commonly encountered IUD related issues eg. pelvic pain, missing strings.
