85551 - Fetal Surveillance Education Full Program

  • : Online

To improve professional levels of knowledge and confidence in the area of fetal surveillance, thereby reducing the risks of adverse perinatal outcomes.

By using standardised and targeted education of the highest clinical quality.
By using evidence based contents that focus on the underlying fetal pathophysiology.
By addressing the appropriate use and interpretation of fetal surveillance including intermittent auscultation, continuous electronic fetal monitoring and fetal Dopplers
By incorporating the RANZCOG Intrapartum Fetal Surveillance Clinical Guideline

Relevance to General Practice

Inadequate or inappropriate intrapartum fetal surveillance was a common feature of adverse obstetric outcomes in Victoria and the expectation was that targeted education could rectify this. The RANZCOG IFS guidelines state that health professionals providing birthing services should be adequately skilled in fetal surveillance, and should also be provided with regular training to ensure maintenance of competence. The Fetal Health Surveillance: Antepartum and Intrapartum Consensus Guideline put out by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. In a study undertaken by Beaves, Jenkins and Wallace, it was found that of 58 hospitals surveyed in Victoria, almost all believed that formal education in fetal surveillance should be compulsory. 20% of the participants taking part in this survey were GPs. The survey identified a lack of focused fetal surveillance education, with only a third of all public hospitals in Victoria offeringformal education in this area.
