To provide practical guidance on management of travellers before and after travel, with a focus on pre-travel vaccines, management of malaria chemoprophylaxis, and other common travel-associated health issues.

Relevance to General Practice

GP’s are often asked to give travel health advice, yet there are no regular short-course training programs for GPs in Australia. 

Many travel-related issues are quite straightforward, but others are relatively complex, thus requiring specialised knowledge and experience in travel medicine issues. Most if not all GPs would be asked for advice regarding travel, and all would at least on occasion see unwell individuals who have recently travelled. Nurses may also be involved in vaccination of travellers. 

Specific healthcare issues need to be provided, high risk groups need to be identified, preventive advice must be addressed, and rapid management of those who return ill is needed. Therefore, there is a genuine need to provide updates and

  • Explain the indications for travel-related vaccines including yellow fever,typhoid,hep A,Japanese encephalitis,hep B,rabies,influenza and tetanus.
  • Assess non-infectious travel-related issues, including altitude medicine.
  • Review travellers diarrhea in the pre-travel setting and in returned travellers.
  • Analyse the indications and choice of malaria chemoprophylactic agents.
  • Discuss patient safety issues and specific contraindications to travel vaccines, with a particular focus on the live yellow fever vaccine.
