86108 - Laverty Pathology Surgical Skin Audit 2017

  • : Online

This clinical audit will allow GPs to assess their histological accuracy and treatment rates overall in their practice. Laverty Pathology is offering General Practitioners assistance with their skin biopsies by way of feedback with both statistical and verbal communication with their experienced Histopathologists. In addition to this, GPs state wide can assess their practice detection and provisional diagnosis against their peers in a confidential setting by way of graphs and statistic reports generated quarterly.

Relevance to General Practice

In addition to the impact melanoma and skin cancers clearly have on our community, we also see that there is a clear lack of experience and training provided to GP’s when it comes to providing the provisional diagnosis of their patient excisions prior to entering into general practice.
In an article written by the Australian Family Physician it states that about 86% of the Australian population present to a GP each year, making them well placed to facilitate the detection of skin cancers by using opportunistic examination, suspicion and good observation skills (http://www.racgp.org.au/afp/2012/july/nonmelanoma-skin-cancers-treatment-options/).
This audit will aim to provide the necessary link between education, training and practice and participating in this audit will improve the skills of the General Practitioner above and beyond the standard that they are currently at, so that they are well equipped to be able to facilitate this early detection.

Learning outcomes

  • Be able to assess and improve their surgical practice by analysing and evaluating their diagnostic and histological excisions.
  • Be able to enhance and confidently identify, investigate, diagnose, excise and treat all forms of skin lesions better in the general practice setting.
  • Be able to assess and compare their own statistics against peers in a confidential setting to ensure their patients are receiving best practice care.
