This is an interactive online course that considers a range of common emergency presentations that may present in the GP in their surgery with a focus on the clinical history and examination, red flags for serious illness and clinical management of the seriously ill child.

Relevance to General Practice

It is easy to miss the seriously ill child who presents with subtle clinical findings or feel uncomfortable when required to manage the seriously ill child. Topics addressed in this interactive online module include vomiting/dehydration, fever/sepsis, severe respiratory distress and cardiac arrest / drowning.

Learning outcomes
  • List the steps in clinical assessment of the child presenting with acute illness
  • Recognise common symptoms in which serious disease may present in a child/infant
  • List the important causes for respiratory distress in a child.
  • List the common ways in which a serious ill neonate may present for medical assessment.
  • List and explain the procedures for basic life support in the child using the standardised approach of the Australian Resuscitation Council.
