91033 - MedicineInsight Educational Visit: COPD, stepping through the options
- : Online
MedicineInsight is a program developed by NPS MedicineWise. MedicineInsight extracts data from participating practices for quality improvement purposes. All participation is based on consent from practices, and is supported as a quality improvement program by the RACGP National Research Ethics and Evaluation Committee (NREEC).
This activity involves a whole of practice meeting to discuss practice data around a single topic in this instance COPD. A trained MedicineInsight facilitator meets with the practice team (GPs, practice nurses, practice manager and others as relevant). Each practice is provided with a report on their data and how it relates to best practice guidelines and organisational measures.
The facilitator then guides the practice through a discussion to consider their data and look for areas they wish to improve. The facilitator helps practice staff identify goals for attainment and articulates these in follow-up communication with a key contact from the practice.
COPD remains a common and major cause of disability and premature death in Australia. It is estimated that 20-30% of patients with a clinical diagnosis of COPD do not have airflow limitation on spirometry. Therefore management requires confirmation of diagnosis using spirometry and classifying severity before starting pharmacological therapy. Pharmacological treatment involves a stepwise approach aiming to match the patient with the right medicine and inhaler, which can be a challenge given the increasing number of medicines and inhalers now available to GPs. Furthermore, correct inhaler technique and adherence is required for patients to gain the maximum benefit from their inhaled medicines, however up to 90% of patients do not use their inhalers correctly.Learning outcomes
