91112 - Online Cultural Respect Encompassing Simulation Training (CREST)

  • : Online

Five online modules have been developed to address the need for cultural sensitivity training for GPs and the practice team. Participants are asked to complete a pre-learning evaluation before starting the online learning, and need to have completed Module 1 ("Introduction to cultural diversity") before they can access the remaining modules. Participants are also asked to complete a post-learning evaluation to assess whether they have gained valuable insights, and also to evaluate the program. The online modules available are:
Module 1- Introduction to cultural diversity
Module 2 - Negotiating between different health beliefs
Module 3 - Effective communication when English proficiency is low
Module 4 - Communicating culturally sensitive issues
Module 5 – Inter-professional Collaboration

Relevance to General Practice

GPs are seeing an increasingly diverse range of patients including migrant, refugee and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients. Yet GPs and the practice team have limited opportunities for cultural sensitivity training. It is particularly difficult for GPs working in rural or remote areas to access such training. CREST has previously developed five two hour cultural sensitivity training modules delivered face-to-face that aim to improve improve cultural sensitivity of health care practitioners and to aid in effective communication in health care provision. These modules have been adapted to five online modules that take approximately one hour each to complete, and incorporate videos of simulated patients. The online modules can be accessed remotely at times convenient to GPs and practice staff, wherever they may be located.
