95183 - COPD Medicines

  • : Online
Relevance to General Practice

The prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is increasing globally, with estimation that it will become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2030. As COPD is a respiratory disorder, inhalation is the preferred route of delivery for medicine.

Studies show that both patients and GPs have limited knowledge around COPD medicines. There is evidence of a strong link between GP and patient understanding of inhaled medicines; if GPs have little understanding of inhaler medicines, this in turn leads to poor patient knowledge of inhaled medicines.

This COPD medicines eLearning course seeks to equip prescribers and health professionals with information on the quality use of COPD medicines, the actions of medicines to manage severity and exacerbations of COPD. This aims to contribute to GP competence and patient health and safety.

Learning outcomes
  • Outline medications used to manage COPD
  • Describe the actions of COPD medications
  • Discuss medication requirements at each stage (severity) of COPD
  • Discuss the medicines used to manage an exacerbation of COPD.
