Ankle pain is a common presenting complaint with numerous causes. Acutely painful ankle conditions are commonly a consequence of trauma, resulting in ankle fractures, ligamentous sprains and tendon ruptures. Chronic ankle pain is often, but not necessarily, initiated by a traumatic event. These painful ankle conditions can be more problematic for the GP to manage. This may be because of limited time and experience to elucidate the underlying problem and treat accordingly.
