How to Treat quiz: Bowel cancer part 2 — Management

Relevance to General Practice

Despite advances in treatment, colorectal cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death in Australia, with over 4000 deaths expected in 2016. Five-year survival has improved to around 67%, but many patients with colorectal cancer remain asymptomatic until the advanced stages of their disease. It is therefore imperative that a co-ordinated screening program is in place to detect the disease at its earliest and most curable stages. Primary treatment of colorectal cancer is surgical resection. Overall, the prognosis for both the screening and management of this disease is reasonably bright, if advances continue at the current rapid rate.
