98955 - Rural Emergency Obstetrics Training (REOT)

A GP practicing in rural and remote Australia is often at times working in isolation or in a solo practice. They are required to draw on a broad range of skills in caring for the community at large - either in practice; supervising and treating inpatients as small local hospitals; or as first responders in isolated trauma situations. 

This is achieved by using inter-professional clinic simulations a practical hands on workshop

Relevance to General Practice

This course was developed by rural GPs and Obstetric specialist who 
identified the need for regular general up skilling of these extended 
practical skills and current practice developments.

Learning outcomes
  • Able to perform an assessment of an obstetric patient in her third trimester to identify any risks that may have arrived.
  • Describe the risk factors and management of birthing complications including breech, shoulder dystocia and postpartum haemorrhage.
  • Determine appropriate retrieval or referral options for patient transfer.
  • Facilitate the immediate and safe care of the mother and baby following an emergency birth.
  • Manage and assist with normal vaginal births and ensure clear documentation of all arrivals.
