Mental health and rheumatology
This session will cover mental health and rheumatology in pregnancy including preconception care and maternal mental health during pregnancy and postpartum.

At the end of this session, you should be able to:

• know the important considerations of preconception care and how chronic disease and poor mental health can impact a healthy pregnancy:
  • mental health, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia and substance dependance
  • systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)
• recognise the lessons from MBRRACE-UK reports and describe the statistics and importance of maternal health in the context of mental health and wellbeing
• develop a systematic approach to assessing and managing acute mental health issues that may develop during pregnancy or postpartum. You should be able to recognise the 'red flag' features and have the basic knowledge of how to treat and escalate the care of a pregnant woman affected by:
  • depression
  • postpartum psychosis
  • drug overdose
  • suicidal ideation
