An understanding of the basics of pain assessment and practical measures to manage acute pain in a pharmacy setting will ensure pharmacists are able to propose appropriate management strategies and provide the best possible advice to their patients.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  • describe the classification of pain—pathophysiology of pain (nociceptive, neuropathic and nociplastic), time-based approach (acute, sub-acute, recurrent and chronic pain), site or origin of pain—cutaneous, musculoskeletal and visceral/non-musculoskeletal and referred;
  • recognise techniques and questions to ask when assessing acute pain in a pharmacy setting;
  • outline over-the-counter strategies to manage acute pain conditions that often present in a pharmacy setting; and
  • describe changes made to opioid prescribing that came into effect from 1 June 2020.
