Advanced Life Support Course - University of Queensland

The purpose of the Basic Life Support/Advanced Life Support (BLS/ALS) Course is to ensure the medical graduate has the essential skills in managing the patient in cardiac arrest. The focus is to ensure that at the end of the course the participant will demonstrate proficiency in recognising the patient in cardiac arrest and have the ability to immediately institute directed lifesaving care with continued resuscitation until assistance is available. Pre activity

1.Participants are required to read the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines, Sections:◦2– Assessment ◦3– The Unconscious State ◦4– Airway ◦5- Breathing ◦6– Compressions ◦7– Defibrillation ◦8– Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation 11 – Advanced Life Support – Sections 11.1 to 11.10.1 Participants are required to complete pre course MCQ assessment with an 80% pass mark requirement.

Post activity

Participant post course evaluation; MCQ Exam with 80% pass mark Scenario Evaluation Random online 3 month assessment of retained practices.

Learning objective

  • Early recognition of the patient requiring BLS/ALS.
  • Application of resuscitation and management plans.
  • Continuing care until definitive care.
  • Consultation, referral and handover techniques.

    Participants will also be up-skilled with respect to skills of :

    • GCS
    • Airway Management
    • Mouth to Mouth, Mouth to Mask, BVM
    • C Spine Stabilisation
    • Defibrillation and Pacing
    • Intraosseous Infusion
    • CPR

    Eligible for 1 day Procedural Grant Funding under Anaesthetics or Emergency Medicine Components.
