AJGP Clinical Challenge July 2019: Ageing

  • : Online

To provide guidance for the general practitioner in the diagnosis and management of conditions related to ageing

Relevance to General Practice

In Australia, there is growing interest in maximising the functional ability of older people. Frailty is prevalent among older people and associated with many negative health outcomes. Despite these negative consequences, frailty is often under-treated by health service providers, especially within the context of single disease–focused, non-person centric and fragmented healthcare systems. A focus on strategies that enable older people to maximise their functional ability, maintain their independence and reach their potential is needed. The challenges faced by ageing populations vary between men and women. In addition, the proportion of people aged =50 years living with chronic diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is increasing in western countries. An ageing population with a higher prevalence of chronic conditions is placing pressure on general practice to provide optimal care to older Australians.

Learning outcomes
