Anaesthesia Fundamentals | Anatomy | Macroscopic Anatomy of the Brain, CSF, Meninges

Macroscopic Anatomy of the Brain, CSF, Meninges
Session Overview
Description
This session will cover the gross anatomy of the brain, cerebrospinal fluid production and circulation and the anatomy of the meninges.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List major surface markings of the brain
- Identify and name major structures on a sagittal section of the brain (diagram & MRI)
- Identify and name major structures on a coronal section of the brain (diagram & MRI)
- Evaluate cerebrospinal fluid circulation, identify flow patterns and regions of production and absorption
- Recognize meningeal layers
- Identify extra and subdural haematomas on CT brain
A working knowledge of neuroanatomy is necessary for neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care. It is especially important for the management of head injuries when accurate diagnosis and description of traumatic lesions is essential.
Macroscopic anatomy of the brain
- Identify the principal lobes of the brain, the central sulcus, the pre- and post-central gyri on a diagram and MRI of a sagittal section of the brain
- Name the parts on a diagram and MRI of a coronal section of the brain
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation
- Demonstrate a knowledge of CSF flow and identify regions of production and absorption
Meninges
- Name the meningeal layers. Correctly identify extradural and subdural haematomas on a CT brain scan
