Anaesthesia Fundamentals | Physiology | Functions of Nerve Cells 2
Functions of Nerve Cells 2
Session overview
Description
This session covers the different types of nerves and their function, the tissue that supports nerves and its function and the production of chemical transmitters. It also covers the structure of nerves and how this affects the speed of conduction.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify the difference between sensory and somatic nerves
- Describe the synthetic functions of nerves
- Describe the morphology of nervous tissue
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete:
- Functions of nerve cells 1 (001-0673)
Neurones conduct at different speeds. Fast conduction is necessary for rapid responses. Slower conduction is part of gaining a general sensory picture of the world we live in. How they conduct messages, both electrically and chemically will be covered in this session.
Neurones are supported by other cells within nerves and in the central nervous system, these supporting tissues or neuroglia have functions in addition to their role as a physical matrix to support neurones. You will also explore these functions.
