The aim of this session is to put your theoretical knowledge to practical use, by working through a series of scenarios relating to fluid management in children.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Manage the fluid status of a child presenting for emergency surgery
  • Manage dehydration in a child
  • Correct acute hyponatraemia

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete the following:

  • Module 04b/Principles of Paediatrics Anaesthesia/Calculations, Corrections and Maintenance - Part 1(001-0446)
  • Module 04b/Principles of Paediatrics Anaesthesia/Calculations, Corrections and Maintenance - Part 2 (001-0447
  • Module 04b/Principles of Paediatrics Anaesthesia/Maintenance Fluids in the Perioperative Period (001-0448)

Having worked through the sessions assessing dehydration in children and how to correct it, as well as managing common electrolyte problems and perioperative fluid therapy, it is time to put that knowledge into action.

This session will allow you to work through three scenarios, each giving you different fluid management problems to deal with.
