  • : Online

This lecture will provide an overview on the physiotherapy role in the management of anorectal dysfunction. Carol will take you through the clinical assessment, clinical reasoning and treatment strategies for all kinds of bowel dysfunction, using a series of case studies. This lecture has a practical aspect which will provide you a quick guide on how to manage bowel dysfunction in a systematic way

Carol Chan is a pelvic floor physiotherapist working in private practice at the Digestive Pelvic Floor Centre in Burwood.  She works with a group of gastroenterologists and colorectal and upper GI surgeons.  Her main area of clinical interest is anorectal dysfunction, including faecal incontinence, obstructed defaecation syndrome and rehabilitation following colorectal cancer.  Carol conducts and reports on anorectal physiology assessment, pudendal nerve terminal motor latency testing and endoanal ultrasound.  She is involved in sacral neuromodulation (SNM) programming and maintenance. She is also involving in a fistula-in-ano management study with the colorectal surgeons at the Digestive Pelvic floor Centre.

Carol is currently enrolled in a PhD (Medicine and Health Sciences) at Sydney Uni (Concord Clinical School) under the supervision of Prof. Janette Vardy (Oncologist Concord), Dr. Susan Coulson (Physiotherapy senior lecturer USyd), Mr. Janindra Warusavitarne (CR surgeon from St. Mark’s London) and Dr. Michael Suen (CR surgeon Concord).  Her research is looking at bowel dysfunction associated with colorectal cancer surgery, specifically low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). The research will assess the feasibility of pelvic floor rehabilitation with rectal balloon biofeedback in the treatment of LARS.

Carol has an interest in general oncology rehabilitation and has completed certificates with PINC&STEEL (NZ). She previously worked with CanRevive (NGO for cancer survivors in Chinese community) providing educational sessions for prostate, bowel and gynaecological cancer groups.
