This webinar will provide a summary of the present clinical knowledge for complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Specifically, what is known about the causes of CRPS and the assessment methodology that is used to diagnosis CRPS. The session will discuss the difference between Type I and Type II CRPS and how the diagnostic criteria differs for these two conditions.

An overview of evidence based treatment for CRPS will be provided, which will include a discussion of contemporary pain science knowledge. Discussion of pain science will include concepts such as central sensitisation, descending inhibition and facilitation and associative learning. Last, a summary of the current research agenda for CRPS and how this might impact clinical practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The primary learning objectives include:

  • To have an increased understanding of the cause and the clinical presentation of people with CRPS.
  • To have increased knowledge of diagnostic criteria in CRPS (and increased confidence in providing a preliminary diagnosis of CRPS)
  • To understand the differences in the types of CRPS and the treatment ramifications of these differences.
  • To have improved knowledge of the evidence-based treatments that are currently available for CRPS.
  • To have an appreciation of the research direction for CRPS

This webinar will enable OT’s to interact with and treat people with CRPS in an evidence-based manner.

PRESENTER

Associate Professor Tasha Stanton

Associate Professor Tasha Stanton is a clinical pain neuroscientist at the University of South Australia, Adelaide and Neuroscience Research Australia, Sydney. Dr Stanton currently holds a National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Career Development Fellowship. She has received >$3.4m in competitive research funding, has published >60 peer-reviewed papers, and has been a keynote/invited speaker at >50 national and international conferences. Originally trained as a physiotherapist, her research focusses on clinical pain neuroscience, with a specific interest in cortical body representation, somatosensation, multimodal illusions, and pain. She has been involved in numerous research projects investigating people with complex regional pain syndrome that span neuroimaging to behavioural analysis to inflammatory markers.
