Basic Principles of Implantology course for Dental Practice
This session will present a brief history on the development of dental implants to the current day. Protocols have changed over the last 30 years which have resulted in reducing treatment times but with no reduction in success rates - so long as careful treatment planning has been carried out.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- describe the historical development of dental implants over the last 30 years and how protocols for osseointegrated implants have changed
- explain the terminology for dental implants
- describe the principles for successful implant treatment
From ancient civilisations, man has tried to replace teeth with different materials such as wood, ivory and bone. Extracted teeth were also used to implant into other people's jaws. Little science had been applied to the clinical problem until the 1950s when 3 types of implants became available.
Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- prosthodontics
- occlusion
- basic surgical skills for hard and soft tissues
Ken graduated with honours from Bristol University in 1982. He gained his London fellowship in 1986 before specialising in restorative dentistry.
He completed a Masters and Senior Registrar training at the Eastman Dental Hospital and became consultant in conservative dentistry and periodontology in 1995. He is recognised by the GDC as a specialist in restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, periodontology and endodontics.
He now shares his time between hospital and private practice.
