It includes:

- What’s the science behind the art of persuasion?
- How can you build influence with integrity?
Setting the Standard – Treatment of Blood Disorders with Blood Products
Blood and blood products are a crucial resource used in modern healthcare. While this precious resource can save lives, its administration is not without risks. As such, the use of blood and blood products must be safe and evidence-based. This session includes a review of patient blood management guidelines, as well as Standard 7 – Blood and Blood Products. We will discuss:
- What are the components of blood and their relevant roles?
- How is appropriate use of each component achieved?
- How does our blood differ from blood products?
- How can nurses ensure safe transfusion in clinical practice?

Prevention of Infection with Central Venous Access Devices
Central venous access devices (CVADs) are essential in many acute care settings. However, their use in the community is also becoming more frequent. The type of catheter involved and its placement and management are an essential part of reducing the risk of complications, such as thrombosis, as well as promoting longevity of lines. This session reviews key considerations relating to the management of CVADs and includes:
- Review of devices – what goes where?
- Peripheral IV devices
- Central venous access devices (CVCs and PICCs)
- Catheter selection – choosing appropriate devices
- Complications – during and following insertion
- Management principles – blood sampling, flushing, medication/fluid administration, dressing and line changes
- Common troubleshooting tips
Unstable Diabetes: Management Options
Sometimes a person may feel "hypo" but have a high blood sugar. You, as a nurse, may see other types of instability that can be demoralising for the patient experiencing them. This session looks at:
- When is diabetes considered unstable?
- How serious is unstable diabetes?
- What type of psychosocial and clinical support should be provided?

Multi-resistant Organisms: What You Need to Know
There is now a range of so-called "superbugs" that are extremely concerning to humans. Antibiotic treatments seldom work and morbidity and mortality from contamination is a grave problem. This session reviews what is known about "superbugs" and informs you of the latest evidence on transmission pathways, prevention, and treatment. It includes:
- Update on latest known superbugs
- How to prevent cross infection
- An explanation of ESBL
Preventing Infections in People with Diabetic Foot Ulcers
The complications and associated ramifications for a person with a diabetic foot ulcer acquiring an infection are disastrous. The risk of amputation significantly increases which of course greatly affects a person’s life. This session reviews the following important considerations for the prevention of infections for people with a diabetic foot ulcer. Includes:
- What are the different types and causes of diabetic foot ulcers?
- How common are infections in people with a diabetic foot ulcer?
- What are the risk factors for developing an infection?
- Who are the people we need to be most vigilant with to prevent infections and how?

Delirium – Raising the Standard of Care
Delirium has a substantially high mortality rate. In older people, it can be caused by a raft of factors that include infection, medicines, and trauma. Early identification of the condition is imperative if morbidity is to be averted. This session looks at delirium, how to identify it, and what to do when it occurs. It includes:
- What are the signs and symptoms of delirium and how do they differ from dementia? What can trigger delirium?
- What can trigger delirium?
- What are barriers to providing best-practice care to people at risk of or who have delirium?
- How can nurses apply the delirium clinical standard to their practice?

The ABC of Hepatitis B and C
Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver. As we saw throughout day one, hepatitis is caused by a number of factors and can progress to cirrhosis, a late stage of liver disease. This comprehensive session focuses on viruses, in particular Hepatitis B and C. It will ensure you are clear on the facts and recent discoveries in relation to the transmission, progression, and treatment of hepatitis B and C. It includes:
- What’s the difference between Hepatitis B and C?
- How are they transmitted and who is most vulnerable?
- A look at testing and disease courses/stages of Hepatitis B and C
- What is new about our knowledge of these diseases?
- What are the aims of modern treatment?
- How do the new medications for chronic Hepatitis C work?
- Current challenges for health professionals working with people with Hepatitis B and C
The Judicious Use of Opioids: Implications for Nursing Practice
Opioids are commonly prescribed as medication for pain management in a range of settings, frequently as a PRN. Yet, their potential for harm and misuse is ever present. It is essential that these medicines are fully understood so that nurses can confidently feel safe administering them and so that they are appropriately used. This session offers an in-depth review of opioid medications, including:
- What are the different types of opioids used today?
- How do opioids work to alleviate pain?
- How do you manage opioid-induced side effects? e.g. constipation, falls, etc.
- What are the dosing considerations in the elderly?
- How do you identify tolerance, prevent dependency, and assess for toxicity?
- How do you identify drug diversion and other inappropriate behaviours?

A common concern shared by midwives, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who work in the drug and alcohol field relates to methamphetamine use during pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. This session will use a case study to practically explain:
- What is known about the impact of ice and methamphetamine use during the perinatal period?
- How to provide effective and compassionate care when methamphetamine use is occurring to a mother and baby during the pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period
Health Coaching – Practical Approaches to Changing Behaviour
Think back on a change you have had to make to your own lifestyle. How challenging was this? Practical approaches to achieving elusive behaviour change are essential. Understanding barriers to change and how to overcome these can greatly assist nurses and midwives to coach, guide, and support healthy outcomes. This session will assist you to coach people with addictions or those who are striving to make lifestyle changes. It includes:
- Why do some people resist change?
- How can we understand what might motivate a mother to change behaviour?
- Simple, practical solutions to overcoming common barriers to change such as:

- Which resources can assist?
- How can you communicate with patients to enable them to become health literate?

Giving and receiving feedback is a skill that requires time and practice to develop. Many nurses may find themselves in positions where they are required to do this regularly yet may not have had an opportunity to have these skills taught. When feedback is communicated in the right way, at the right time, and for the right reasons, it can be a powerful tool in achieving desired outcomes. This session will help you discover how you can feel comfortable with the art of giving and receiving feedback. It includes strategies for giving feedback to:
- Student nurses
- New staff members
- Other colleagues
