  • : Cairns QLD 4870

Breastfeeding offers a variety of health benefits to infants, but there are often concerns about drug transfer from the mother to the infant through breast milk. This education discusses the safety of various classes of drugs for breastfeeding mothers, and outlines which medications require closer monitoring or are contraindicated.

Upon completion of this module the participant should:

  • Recognise the key health benefits of breastfeeding.
  • Have an understanding of the mechanism of drug transfer from mother to infant via milk and the factors that affect drug disposition in the infant.
  • Understand that few medications are contraindicated in breastfeeding and that in most situations breastfeeding and medication can be safely combined.
  • Be familiar with common drug classes and their use in breastfeeding and which drugs within these classes can be safely used and which require closer monitoring.
  • Recognise the importance of involving the patient in any prescribing decisions and documenting and communicating discussions.
