This session is the third of eight sessions that aims to support your learning about cancer.
These sessions have been developed to align with the RCN Career and Education Framework for Cancer Nursing registrants providing general cancer care.
This session provides an overview of the treatments used to kill cancer cells including SACT, radiotherapy and surgery, some of the toxicities associated with each type of treatment and the effect these may have on a person’s physical, psychological, emotional, social and financial needs. It provides tips on nursing interventions to support people manage side-effects and move towards recovery.
Systematic Anti-Cancer Therapy
The term systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) is an overarching term used to encompass chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biological and molecular targeted therapy and hormone agents.
The side-effect profiles of the different treatments vary considerably and it is increasingly common for people to receive multiple treatments either together or sequentially. This can make assessment more complex [1].
