Central mediators of pain course for Dental Practitioners



This session is designed to give the learner a basic understanding of how pain is experienced and analysed within the central nervous system (CNS), and of the factors which may alter this experience.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- explain what is meant by the 'gate' control theory of pain modulation
- describe how the sensation of pain is conveyed to the brain
- classify central nervous system (CNS) neurotransmitters and describe their principal effects and sites of action
Pain is the symptom most commonly complained about to healthcare professionals.
Before commencing this session you should:
- have a basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system
