Chronic pain: opioids and beyond

  • : Online

Be guided through using a multimodal approach when supporting your patients to manage their chronic non-cancer pain. Review a systematic approach for the assessment of pain and function when initiating, continuing or discontinuing opioid therapy.

About

Management of chronic pain can be complex and challenging. It is estimated that approximately one third of patients experiencing chronic non-cancer pain are prescribed opioids despite the lack of evidence for their long-term benefit.

Review how your practice measures up to the recommendations of Australian guidelines and support your patients to manage their chronic pain using a multimodal approach.

This Clinical e-Audit will help you to improve the individual management of your patients by guiding you to:

  • assess patients using a biopsychosocial approach
  • assist patients to self-manage their condition
  • incorporate non-pharmacological therapies into the management of chronic pain
  • review and assess the need for medicines, including opioids.

Our Clinical e-Audits are free quality improvement activities that help GPs review their current prescribing practice for patients with certain conditions, compared with current best practice guidelines.

What’s involved:

  • completing electronic data collection for 10 patients
  • securely submitting de-identified data online
  • receiving immediate patient
  • specific feedback to assist implementation of changes to practice
  • reviewing individual and peer feedback results based on best practice clinical indicators
  • recording progress of individual patients automatically identified for review
  • reflecting on improvements in practice.

Learning outcomes

Participation in this activity will assist GPs to:

  • discuss the benefits of non-pharmacological therapy for patients with chronic non-cancer pain
  • develop pain management goals and plans in collaboration with patients with chronic non-cancer pain
  • implement a systematic approach for the assessment of pain and function when initiating, continuing or discontinuing opioid therapy
  • determine the need for ongoing therapy with opioids in patients with chronic non-cancer pain.

You will...

  • have access to evidence-based information to update your knowledge
  • receive practical advice to provide to your patients
  • generate a management plan for each patient
  • receive immediate feedback and be able to compare your results with those of your peers.
