The intention of this module is to provide nurses with the opportunity to learn more about the needs of children born with clefts of the lip and palate and their families, and in particular their multidisciplinary management and the specialist teams who provide this care in Victoria. The key learning outcomes have been developed with the aim of increasing knowledge and understanding of clefts of the lip and/or palate across the nursing and midwifery sectors and to promote consistent education and information for families, particularly in the early stages of diagnosis and management.

This module was developed by the multidisciplinary cleft team at the Royal Childrens Hospital, Melbourne, for the ANMF (Vic Branch).

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Outline the aetiology and incidence of clefting of the lip and / or palate
  • Label different classifications of cleft of the lip and / or palate
  • List the key elements of multidisciplinary treatment across a child’s growth into adulthood
  • Discuss evidence based feeding principles to parents of a newborn with a cleft
  • Describe good oral hygiene practices for children born with cleft lip and / or palate under 2 years of age
  • Describe the most frequent co-morbidities associated with infants with cleft and how they might be identified
