Whilst not used in the everyday language of a nurse, the term ‘nurse healer’ is common in holistic nursing. In fact, nurses who describe themselves as healers often tap into deep sources of resilience, strength and purpose. Understanding what it means to be a healer and practising self-care provides the foundation we require to compassionately care for others. This introductory session will look at how surviving and thriving in the energy intense profession of nursing relies on us looking after ourselves first. Includes:
- What does it mean to be a ‘nurse healer’?
- How can engaging in regular self-care activities help to position us as healers?
- How we can develop self-awareness around our own wellbeing?
- When may a nurse require personal coaching?
The Power of Empathy...
At the core of the nursing identify is compassionate intention. Nurses intend to communicate and practice with genuine care, respect and empathy for others. However, the ‘delivery’ of fragmented, task-oriented, protocol-driven care can often leave us losing sight of these core intentions. In the setting of growing rates of complex, chronic care, it is worth considering: are we nursing with our heads or our hearts? Effective health coaching requires us to connect with patients and their stories. Let’s re-examine the power of empathy. Consider:

The Art of Active Listening
Perhaps the greatest myth of communication is that speaking is more important than listening. Active listening is a core component of any communication with a patient, family member, colleague or friend. Asking, rather than telling, a foundation of coaching and can guide a person to reaching the outcome that they may be seeking. Like any other skill, active listening can be learnt. What makes active listening so powerful and fundamental to the coaching process? Discover:

Are we Asking the Right Questions?
The misuse and abuse of asking questions is a common mistake made during many forms of communication. It’s especially prevalent as we try and assist others on their quest for health. Simple strategies, used regularly during psychotherapy and health coaching, can assist us to ask better questions. When we invite discussion, we connect with others, convey empathy and place the person equally alongside us in the therapeutic relationship. Holistic nurses will see many similarities between these skills and their approaches to everyday nursing practice. Includes:

Our capacity to respond positively in the face of challenges and setbacks is known as resilience. Resilience is recognised to help us adapt positively to stress, recover from trauma and grow and develop through adversity. The lengthy, energy intense and difficult nature of chronic illness calls for the development of resilience, in our patients and ourselves. This session considers:
- Resilience - are we born with it or does it develop?
- Are there certain behaviours that boost resilience?
- How can resilience assist with the emotional consequences of chronic diseases?

Creating a Safe Space to Change
It’s crucial to consider why and how you can create a safe environment for you and your patient to enable change. Boundaries, the invisible lines you must not cross form a crucial aspect of this. Most nurses can clearly identify situations where unprofessional conduct or professional misconduct occurs as a result of a nurse or other health professional violating the clinician-patient relationship. However, there may also be less obvious examples that constitute a blurred boundary. Poorly defined personal boundaries can sabotage your personal and professional wellbeing. In order for you to successfully apply coaching principles to your role, consider:

The hope is that this wisdom leads to better decisions being made about a person’s own health. How can we ensure that what we say has the greatest impact? How can we apply decision making science to spark behaviour knowledge retention. Includes:

What is Nurse Health Coaching?
While coaching, sometimes known as supervision, is not new, health coaching is a relatively modern concept. There’s a natural fit between patients who want to improve their health and nurses who draw on their clinical expertise and ability to connect and communicate meaningfully with patients to help them achieve their goals. Health coaching calls on core skills inherent in nursing and is very much aligned with a person-centred, holistic approach to care. This session introduces the following:

Nurse health coaches have a unique ability to understand and explore a person’s readiness for change. Once this readiness is established, we can collaborate to create shared goals. How can nurse health coaching enable change and transform others? This session considers:

- How can we understand what might motivate someone?
- Guiding and supporting change - how to actually make it happen!
Coaching to Overcome Barriers to Change
Think back on a change you have had to make to your own lifestyle. How challenging was this? Applying empathy to behavioural change can assist us to appreciate how difficult it is for our patients to make significant changes to their health. Understanding barriers and how to overcome these can greatly assist nurse health coaches to guide and support transformation in others. Includes:

The Weight of the World - Managing Expectations
Do you occasionally feel exasperated because you’ve felt like you’ve said the same thing over and over again? It can be frustrating if someone fails to take your advice. In addition to clear boundaries, having a clear understanding of what we can achieve as we assist people on their journey to health is essential. If we are to prevent feelings of stress, burnout and compassion fatigue associated with our jobs we need to ensure our aspirations are realistic. This session considers:
- How problematic are unrealistic expectations?
- What can we learn from common defence mechanisms?
- How can you distinguish acceptance from resignation?
- Is it possible to turn frustration into contentment?

Putting it All Together - is Mindfulness the Answer?
The ability to be present and free of distractions, even if they exist, is what enables us to communicate and practice with compassionate intention. Every opportunity that we are with a patient is an opportunity to connect. Yet, this is only the case if we are fully present. How beneficial is the practice of mindfulness, to our patients but also ourselves? This final session demonstrates simple ways in which mindfulness can assist nurses to heal and restore health, even when time is at a premium. Includes practical examples of how mindfulness can:
- Reduce stress when we are feeling fatigued
- Bring us back to the present when we are feeling busy and overwhelmed
- Remind us why we are here, our purpose and what we value
- Enable us to reconnect with our patients and profession again
- Care and coach with compassion

The Goal Need for Program
The importance of caring for the whole person cannot be underestimated in today’s fast and demanding health setting. The total wellbeing of a patient can easily be forgotten in the urgency of functional care and technological practices. The healing value of holism takes into account mind-body-spirit within the context in which a person lives. Understanding practical principles of holistic nursing and health coaching in modern healthcare will more likely result in meeting all the needs of patients. As well, there is evidence that holistic care has positive health benefits to patients and nurses. Nurses who nurture their own holistic needs are better positioned to care for patients.
