This session will introduce you to the common classifications and indices of occlusion and malocclusion. It will include the concept of ideal occlusion and that malocclusion is simply a biological variation rather than a disease.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe what is an ideal occlusion
  • List the common classifications of malocclusion
  • Describe various malocclusions and occlusal traits

This session describes what an ideal occlusion looks like and outlines the common classifications of occlusion and malocclusion, including how incisors and buccal segments should be described. Other occlusal traits such as overjet, overbite and crossbite will be defined.
